Contractor vacancies continue to rise


Job growth in the public sector for 'permies' has once again outperformed the rest of the UK according to the latest statistics from the CWJobs.co.uk/SSL quarterly IT skills survey. Permanent IT vacancies in the public sector increased by 18% and contractor vacancies rose by 19% in Q2 2004.

The public sector was the second highest performer in terms of the quarterly rise in permanent jobs with an 18% increase in vacancies compared to Electronics/Comms which saw a 31% increase in permanent vacancies in Q2. However, Permanent IT vacancies saw the biggest annual increase with a 49% rise in vacancies in Q2 2004, compared to the national average of 25%.

Contractor vacancies did increase by 19% but are lagging behind the software houses/consultancies, electronics/comms and media sectors which all saw vacancies increase by over 20% in Q2. From an annual perspective, contractor vacancies in the public sector are below average having seen a 29% increase in vacancies compared to the national average of 44%.

The most popular skills for permanent public sector IT staff between April and June 2004 were Office, Oracle and SQL. Average salaries for developers with these skills between April and June 2004 were £50,000 for Oracle and £47,000 for SQL. Compared to £44,000 and £48,000 respectively.

    Commenting on the statistics, Richard Nott, Sales Director at CWJobs said:

    “As predicted, demand for IT jobs in the public sector remains strong. The IT industry is the healthiest it has been in eighteen months and we anticipate that demand for IT personnel will remain steady as the industry makes a full recovery.”
