Intel to launch superchip Sonoma
Intel is poised to unveil a second-generation chip set to enable at least 50 new computers and pocket-sized devices, designed for professionals on the move.
The US giant says super chip 'Sonoma' will power a range of devices from laptops with 17-inch screens - to pocket-sized computers.
Its launch is a direct response to the competitive threat of Apple computer, which has now surpassed Wall Street expectations with iPod sales.
According to the Business, one source at Intel said Sonoma is targeting all those consumers who spent their Christmas season queuing for the year's must-have music player.
The chip set is likely to pose some form of threat to the technology darling, based on its capability to play digital music files on Dolby 5.1 digital surround sound.
However, audio capabilities exclude second-generation performance, like graphics twice the speed of current Intel chip offerings and new wireless networking software.
Both of these represent the company's claim to have developed a consumer-friendly chip, able to deliver graphics better than predecessor, Centrino, while also allowing for faster connectivity to wireless internet hotspots.
Sonoma chips are expected to power devices without affecting battery life, so users can avoid the typical defect of shorter lifespan when mobile platforms are given new capabilities.
Intel has said the use of wireless technologies has now "passed through the geek and business travel barrier," reflecting the company's plan to have about 150 devices Sonoma-enabled by the year-end.
They are tipped to include tech heavyweights, such as Hewlett Packard, Dell, IBM, Toshiba and Samsung yet no confirmation of the initial or end-of-year manufacturers has been given.
Intel hopes that a new release of computer products to coincide with Sonoma's scheduled debut on Wednesday, will unveil solutions not only for business and academics but also for gamers and music fans.
The chip set is part of a strategy at Intel to "bring all-day, anytime and anywhere wireless mobile PC computing closer to reality."
