BT to offer 'porn on demand' TV

Soft porn will soon be more available on the Internet thanks to BT’s plan to put adult movies at the heart of its on-demand TV service - due for nationwide launch this autumn.

The telecoms giant confirmed over the weekend that BT Vision will host a range of “adult entertainment” services alongside television, sports and music content.

Any x-rated offering would have to comply with regulators’ rules and meet the company’s taste and decency standards, BT said on Saturday speaking to The Financial Times.

“In common with many UK entertainment providers and in response to anticipated customer demand, we expect BT Vision will carry some adult entertainment services,” it said.

Already the company has signed a deal with i-concerts and Eagle Rock to offer more than 500 concerts and performances by some of the world’s biggest music artists via its Vision service.

Experts at telecoms analysis firm Enders have reportedly questioned the volume of customers BT can expect, estimating only 800,000 subscribers by 2010, compared to Sky’s 8m.

The firm points out on-demand programming has been available in the UK for a decade, with cable operators at BSkyB netting about £180million in pay-per-view revenues last year.

Its analysis shows about 60 per cent of PPV revenues came from sports and 25 per cent came from adult content.

In an advisory released at the end last year on VoD services, Enders said, “The US experience…indicates that the potential for monetisation of VoD is limited.

“We estimate about 80% of US VoD ‘views’ are free and we consider that free VoD is essential to form customer habits. Customers appear however to be willing to pay mainly for difficult-to-access premium sports content and adult material, as well as for films and leading TV shows.”

Enders said BT’s move into adult services is mainly to help the incumbent telecoms provider retain its broadband subscribers.

Yet a ‘catch-up TV’ facility and 5-way VoIP service will be incorporated into BT Vision, suggesting the company is prepared to look further than its current database to find subscribers.
