'Spyware' husband gets life for killing wife

A jealous husband savagely murdered his wife by stabbing her in the face after spyware he fitted to her computer and mobile phone convinced him she was having an affair, a court has heard.

Jonathan Howarth became so paranoid that his high school sweetheart he married in 2003 was being unfaithful that he rigged her car, computer and mobile with sophisticated monitors.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the 28-year-old male spent £100 on spyware and fitted voice-activated tape recorders in the car of Andrea Howarth – an IT teacher – to catch her in the act.

Evidence reportedly presented at court suggests that on the night she died, Mr Howarth found an e-mail hinting his wife had ended the affair – but text messages he read later stoked his fears.

A judge at Newcastle Crown Court heard that Mrs Howarth, also 28, had actually stopped the affair the night her husband fatally confronted her in a street in Wingate, Co Durham.

Paul Sloan, QC, stated how Howarth, by this stage, had become “totally paranoid” about his wife after she had a son with another man, before her marriage to Howarth, a mature student.

In addition, the court was said to have heard how the couple separated after their marriage began to sour, during which time Howarth hired a private investigator, and subsequently, realised his wife was seeing a former boyfriend.

Despite her claims that the romance had ended, Howarth, who was working in the Fir Tree public house in Wingate, realised the two were still in contact and were exchanging text messages.

That night, Howard offered to walk his wife to her new home, having already armed himself with a knife.

It is believed the couple started arguing in the street - where Howarth stabbed her in the face, neck and shoulder.

The 28-year-old gave himself up the next morning, when it was reported police led him away still wearing his wedding ring.

Despite claims by lawyers for Howarth that he had taken the knife “to frighten her,” he was handed down a life sentence.
