A new Web-based service that lets you create a clone of yourself to chat or respond to questions while you are unreachable is racking up two new users per second. MyCyberTwin offers users a type of virtual PR agent that can be programmed with as much factual or biographical information as you like, to answer business and personal queries. The more time users spend programming their twin, the more it takes on your personality, particularly if you feed it content from your instant messages, e-mails and blogs. Not only does the cybertwin reside at its own online domain, with a unique URL, but it can also chat on your behalf through social networks such as MySpace and dating websites. Already one US blogger who created his own “evil, anti-social” cybertwin has had about 1,000 people chat to his virtual self. Another user of the service, launched by Australian-based RelevanceNow!, has suggested remote workers could use the technology to trick their bosses into thinking they are online. However the cybertwin has no real intelligence, meaning that without programmed information it can only respond by issuing predictable conversational gambits. The service is free to use, but large users, such as businesses, who rack up more than 500 visitors per month, pay a fee if they want extra credit to keep their twin talking. Organisers say a twin is ideal to answer your customers’ commonly asked questions while promoting your business at the same time, without the need to check e-mails, blogs or posts. Users can also make their cybertwins ask questions, allowing a more natural and humanised way to gain feedback about a business or social opportunity than using static Web-based forms.
