Porn.com sells for a record $9.5m

Porn.com has been sold for a record $9.5m (£4.8m), making it the most expensive all-cash domain transaction in the history of the internet.

It was sold by Moniker, a domain asset manager, to MXN Ltd, a Web media and investment firm affiliated with adult website downloadpass.com.

Although complete terms of the transaction, which took place last month, have not been disclosed, the deal represents the second largest domain name sale in history, the firms said.

It follows the sale of the domain name Sex.com, which changed hands in a private sale in January 2005 for $12m in cash and stock.

Co-founder of Moniker.com, Monte Cahn said: “The sale of Porn.com further reinforces the growing trend of businesses that place a high strategic value on generic domains related to their industry.

“Porn.com will prove to be a valuable asset for MXN Ltd. because of its significant number of daily visitors, established type-in traffic in addition to being the top domain in the adult industry.“

MXN Ltd is currently hosting a sex shop and live search engine from porn.com, which attracted initial offers at auction of $7million.

The domain name Naked.com is due to go under the hammer in June. Moniker said domain owners interested in selling their names at auction should contact the company at sales@moniker.com
