Flood victims get discount on PCs

Flood victims are being offered discounted IT equipment thanks to a philanthropic tie-up between Dell and The Federation of Small Businesses.

Aimed at helping businesses get their IT function back up to speed quickly, the group’s offer is available on three desktop computers and three laptop computers manufactured by Dell.

Taking advantage of the offer, which is only open to FSB members, means companies with an IT base should be able to replace their systems quicker than if they went through insurers.

The Federation also claims the scheme may actually resuscitate some flood-hit businesses that would otherwise cease trading because of having to wait for their claim to be paid.

The FSB’s website is hosting a list of the available computers, which includes a full spec of each system and its reduced rate, excluding VAT.

Orders must be made by October 26 and all machines will be delivered in 7 to 10 working days, according to Dell.

Separately, flood-hit businesses should note that HMRC has said it will waive interest and surcharges on tax paid late due to the floods.

The commissioners say they will exercise their discretionary power not to collect such interest and surcharges in the interim, while the collection of some taxes will also be deferred.

For firms located in areas hit by last month’s floods, the government suspended debt collection, compliance checks and investigations.

Practical advice is also being offered to individuals and businesses which have lost tax records in the flooding, via HMRC’s dedicated helpline on 0845 3000 157.
