'IT is central to business so contractors are vital'

As ICT systems are now a core component for most businesses, specialist contract staff, rather than employees, who can install and maintain them have become a necessity.

Such is the take of financial experts reviewing the dwindling share price of IT jobs agency SThree Recruitment, in a verdict that bodes well for contractors' prospects.

In an editorial yesterday, the Mail on Sunday’s Midas column said the agency should be less exposed to a downturn in the economy than its generic recruitment rivals.

IT staff, the column said, tend to be a priority for most companies today because the systems in their remit, such as computers and servers, “are so central to business life.”

Moreover, even if the downturn does deter clients of SThree from recruiting permanent staff, “they are still likely to need contract workers,” Midas predicted.

Michael Page, another jobs agency with a large IT recruitment arm, was also hailed as an indicator that IT staffing companies, like the economy, remain in relatively good health.

Although less of its business is dedicated to placing IT workers, (80% of SThree concentrates on IT hiring), the global firm has delivered an impressive third-quarter trading statement.

Last week’s statement from Michael Page International added that aside from specific banking sectors, “strong demand for talent” remained, while the outlook for the future was “confident.”

In the Americas, third quarter gross profit was £10.6m, an increase of 81.1% over the £5.9m recorded in the third quarter of 2006, MH reported.

In the UK, third quarter gross profit was £49m, an increase of 19.9% over the £40.8m recorded in the third quarter of 2006, the statement said.

Michael Page reflected: “The UK business continues to experience good levels of activity across all disciplines and regions of the UK.”

Computer People and Hays will soon report their third-quarter trading figures, providing further insight into how financial upheaval has coloured IT recruitment of temporary or contractor workers.
