As mobile phones take on an ever increasing amount of functions, tech researchers at NTT DoCoMo seem to think their Japanese customers are in need of a makeover. Not only does the firm’s new 'Fitness Phone' measure a user’s pulse and amount of steps they walk in one day, it also can detect if they have bad breath. “Our primary target groups would be fat-fighting middle-aged businessmen and young women on diets,” a spokesman for NTT DoCoMo told Reuters. According to reported details of the device, users simply punch in statistics, like their age, gender and weight, to get a health check. Breathing into the device can also warn users if they need to freshen up before a business meeting. And being developed by researchers in Australia, a new “smart wardrobe” could also save people from embarrassment with regular clients. Garments hung inside are embedded with a tiny electronic panel which passes data via a conductive rail to a computer in the base of the wardrobe. A panel sewn into the collar of a garment could store data such as colour, fabric and cleaning instructions, along with when it was last worn. This enables the wardrobe to alert its owner if they’re about to make the fashion faux pas of wearing the same outfit twice. A preview of the technology, seen by America’s Abc news, reveals it could also act as a fashion butler by downloading from the Web fashionable colour combinations. The scope of the system may even allow certain hangers to trigger the week’s latest dance tracks when they are removed from the rail, the researchers said. Prof Bruce Thomas, of the Wearable Computer Laboratory at the University of South Australia, explained: “The wardrobe could tell you that you have a meeting this morning with Joe Bloggs, that you have worn the same shirt the last three times you met him and that maybe you should wear something else or he will think you only have one shirt.” Oct 12, 2007 Email this article Printer friendly page Previous Page
