Sony woos developers with half-price kit

Sony has cut the cost of the software pack third party developers use to create games for the PlayStation 3 in a fight back against Nintendo’s better selling Wii console.

With immediate effect, the development kit for the PS3 will be halved in price in Japan, North America and Europe, the electronics giant said on Monday.

The price slash means software professionals in Europe can begin developing titles for Sony’s third-generation console at a starting price of €7,000 – just over £5,000.

It comes after Capcom, the firm behind Resident Evil, said it would be developing its latest game in its Monster Hunter series for the Wii rather than the PS3, as intended.

For Sony, the change of heart is cause for concern that the brightest game developers will focus their attentions on Nintendo’s console, which is already outselling the PS3.

Figures obtained by The Independent show that the Wii has outsold the PS3 by two to one; or sales of 13.2m against 5.6m respectively worldwide for October this year.

Analysts say consumers have responded well to the exercise-friendly Wii, which lets gamers physically interact, and to its cheaper price tag when set aside the PS3 or Xbox360.

But Sony, whose PS2 console once dominated game sales, is mounting a comeback: not only are developers invited to create for half the price, but the cost of the console is also falling.

Announced just weeks ago, the cheaper PS3 has already generated a reported doubling in sales in the US, further to outselling the Wii in Japan for the first time.

The company says the cut-price console was born after “feedback from thousands of existing PS3 owners as well as research into future potential PS3 owners.”
