Software to make you work smarter

Brain-testing software costing £200 offers remarkable and significant gains in people’s memory that can rejuvenate their ability to recall by up to ten years.

Users of the computer-based programme effectively double the rate at which they process information, potentially giving an 80-year-old the speed of a 30-year-old.

Although the findings stem from a firm selling the software, they have been endorsed by scientists at the respected Mayo Clinic and the University of Southern California.

In a study of more than 500 men and women, three quarters of people who used the Brain Fitness programme, from Posit Science, noted positive changes in their lives.

The US firm said their cognitive software doesn’t just teach “memory tricks” or hone their skills on a computer game; it actually “improves brain function more broadly.”

As the study involved the elderly, benefits included remembering shopping lists without a list; hearing conversations in noisy restaurants and finding words to speak more easily.

In the study, volunteers aged 65 and over were given either a traditional educational programme or Posit’s computer software, known as cranial callisthenics.

Although both groups emerged with better recall and processing of information, such as speech, users of the company’s software showed memory gains equivalent to approximately 10 years.

This group also performed much better than their counterparts using the traditional tests in four separate memory tests, proving mental ageing is a reversible process.

“Using the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program - a program that is on the market and available - can effectively strengthen and build memory and processing speed,” Posit said.

“These improvements help people perform better at work, connect better with others, enjoy their favourite activities more, and keep up with daily tasks efficiently.”

Jeff Zimman, its chief executive, added: “In processing speed, people who were on average 80 years old were performing like 30-year-olds in speed at those tasks.”
