Out-of-the-office brainstorming sessions for tax staff to create a mantra for Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs have cost the department almost £1.5million. Just two words – HMRC Ambition – emerged after 450 Revenue officials met three times last year, as part of a re-branding exercise, billed to the taxpayer at £1.34m. The price tag was made public by the Liberal Democrats’ questions on the re-branding exercise – which HMRC said was to let its “staff set the direction of the new department.” Although an explanation of the two-word mantra was not immediately available yesterday, the Revenue has reportedly starting using it on internal documents. From now on, the message is expected to be conveyed to staff and taxpayers so they learn what HMRC “Ambition means for them [and] the part they will play in achieving it.” The department’s capability review also adds that “our ‘Ambition’” – is “our statement of our role, aims, values and what we stand for – to provide a more coherent vision of the future.” The mission statement stems from the Revenue’s pledge in November 2006 to adopt “a 21st century approach to business,” underpinned by offering a “more effective service to local businesses and individuals.” Tax staff decided on the two-word moniker after dismissing other re-branding extremities: a ‘pink and fluffy’ logo spelling out ‘Thank you’ to those who paid taxes and an ‘Elite Enforcement’ badge warning tax evaders they would be “hunted down”. UPDATED: A spokesperson for HMRC reflected: "The Ambition isn't a slogan. Our Ambition is about our future direction. "It's about putting the customer at the heart of everything we do. It's about our role, values and how HMRC would... protect society by dealing firmly with those who intentionally avoid their responsibilities."
