IT projects 'leaking millions in revenue'

IT projects for digital, media and telecoms clients are so poorly conceived that they are doomed from the start, costing potentially millions in lost revenue every day.

One in three of the trio’s IT initiatives are flawed either because tech managers are badly briefed or because the project brief they receive is incoherent.

Little wonder that almost half the sectors’ clients show “unrealistic expectations” about what their IT projects can deliver for the wider business, says a survey of 500 project managers.

Adding to mangers’ woes, and the lost revenues, is that while almost all digital, media and telecoms firms want them in place for IT initiatives, 56% don’t define project success criteria.

Even more worrying is many of these firms’ fail to identify what the project will really cost, said Steve Pragnell, the chief executive of PM3 Consulting, which commissioned the survey.

“As a result projects run over time, over budget, deliver poor quality products and often fail to realise any tangible business benefits at all,” Mr Pragnell said yesterday.

If the industries’ companies want to minimise revenue leaks and use PMs, as 89% testified, he recommended such personnel are put in place quickly and at a cost effective rate.

But the survey shows one third of IT project managers believe the digital, media or telecoms assignment they are working on is heading for an expensive crash.

Reading between the lines of the findings, PM3 said these firms “often fall at the first hurdle” – establishing a coherent or realistic business case for the tech project.

“Digital, media and telecoms companies need to be much more savvy and rigorous about their project management,” Mr Pragnell said.

“It is shocking that millions of pounds are wasted due to lack of foresight and inefficiency. Industry needs to wake up to the value of hiring project management professionals. Ultimately it could be the difference between making or wasting millions.”
