IT jobs market defies slowdown

New recruitment figures reveal the UK’s technology jobs sector is continuing to escape the detrimental effects of the global liquidity-cum-credit crunch.

Computer People’s job creation index shows that permanent and contract IT roles last month rose 94% from the same time last year, before the economic wobbles.

According to the agency, which supplies IT workers to the likes of TNS and Ericsson, 581 new IT jobs were created in February 2008, compared to 300 in February 2007.

The findings of the index, which tracks IT job creation in 21 industries, were seized upon as evidence that the “IT sector is coming to the fore” during the tough times.

Nick Dettmar, managing director at Computer People, also said that the IT industry, as a whole, would be encouraged to learn it is staying one step ahead of the slowdown.

“These figures are indicative of a market thriving from greater demand for skilled workers,” he said of the index, which covers 2,000 UK organisations.

“We have already seen that many businesses are focusing on IT as they endeavour to improve efficiencies in the wake of the credit crunch.”
