BT customers blocked from email

A reported glitch to BT’s mail server left thousands of customers blocked out of their Web-based accounts over the Easter holidays, it emerged last night.

The first sign that users of BT Yahoo! mail were unable to read their e-mails came over a week ago, according to posts on the search site’s forums.

But reportedly admitting there was a problem yesterday, BT said that just a “small number” of its customer had been affected, and only for a “couple of days.”

A spokesman for the company added that its engineers were working to fix the outage, although no sign was given when this is likely to be.

The uncertainty is irking both business and consumer account holders alike.

“There are tens or even hundreds of thousands small businesses like mine that use their business domain name email address that are going to be crippled,” one user wrote on BT’s community forum. “What BT cannot defend is that there's been no notification [of the problem]."

Another BT Yahoo! user on the Yahoo Questions site wrote: “[I] can't access my mail for two days…I was able to access from my work computer but not from my home computer. There seems to be no way to find out what is going on”

Pointing to Yahoo!, which partnered with BT in 2003 to offer the product, another user testified to feeling ill-informed.

“I have sent several emails to Yahoo asking for help with no response. Not sure about the rest of you out there, but after missing two new employment opportunities and no way to talk to a customer service person at Yahoo, I'll be closing my accounts.”
