Hays to go IT-savvy

The new chief executive of Hays, Alistair Cox, will bring his IT background to the fore of the FTSE-listed recruiter this week when he addresses the company’s shareholders.

In a keynote on Thursday, he is tipped to tell investors how technological know-how will play a greater part at Hays, which was voted best IT contractor recruiter of 2007 .

As a former chief executive of Xansa, one of the first UK IT service giants to set up in India, his focus may be on developing Hays, via ICT, internationally.

In this first quarter alone, Hays added five offices overseas, made its first foray into Denmark and, overall, made almost half - 42% - of its profits from outside Britain.

But the Sunday Times suggests the IT injection from Mr Cox, who joined Hayes in November, won’t exclude the UK and Ireland, where recruitment has suffered a “modest slowdown,” the firm said.

The paper’s Inside the City columnist pointed out: “For example, most temps’ timesheets are still recorded on paper. Putting the whole process online is an easy win.”

In line with the bigger role for technology at the agency, Hays’ UK IT business continued to grow at a “modest” rate in this quarter, when compared to the same time last year.

However, as in recent quarters, permanent jobs have been more buoyant than the temporary market, which is still growing, albeit at a slower rate, while demand has also weakened from the City.

“Growth in the United Kingdom & Ireland has slowed compared to the first half, but continues to be good,” Hays said.

“Whilst mindful of the current economic uncertainty, the board remains confident in its outlook for the year.”
