IT makes the day seem longer

Humans can now squeeze 31 hours of activities into a single day thanks to hi-tech devices and other examples of IT on the move.

Such is the finding of OTX, a thought-leadership consultancy, which says multi-function and time-saving technologies do, in fact, allow users to get a lot more done.

Users of Bluetooth and wireless internet technologies, for example, can now achieve in just 24 hours what would have taken them 31 hours just a decade ago.

From its survey of 3,000 people, OTX pointed to the opening of emails over breakfast as the first productivity boost of the day, typically enabled by BlackBerry-style devices.

Not only do people continue to use technologies that respond faster than they did a decade ago at work, but they also tend to multi-task in office environments.

This trend of using machine so individuals can juggle more than one task extends into the evening, where workers send texts, emails and watch TV at the same time.

“It makes you wonder what people were doing in the mid-1990s,” Patrick Moriarty, a research at OTX reportedly said. “Maybe they talked to each other in the evenings.”

The firm told CUK that the full study into how media and ICT are being used, called Longitudinal Media Experience, will be published in June.
