Not content with just offering food, insurance, broadband and degrees, Tesco, the UK’s biggest supermarket, has added another feather to its cap: digital downloads. From next month, Tesco Digital will offer 3.3million music tracks as part of the retailer’s new desire to become a “one-stop shop for everybody entertainment needs.” By the end of the year, all of the site’s music tracks will be compatible with iPod and MP3 players, whereas now downloads are only available in Windows Media format. In a move destined to shake up the online entertainment world, the site will also offer downloadable TV shows, films and games, of which 100 will be available at launch. Tesco hailed the launch as “the first of its kind by any supermarket” but observers point that out Wal-Mart has already launched its own film and music download store. Compared to Apple iTunes, the market leader, the US supermarket priced its downloads competitively - a strategy Tesco will reportedly adopt, with deals likely on bundles. Tesco said internet users “of all ages and technical ability” will be able to use it digital download store, which it vowed to develop over the coming weeks and months.
