Software duo scoop £20,000 prize

A student software developer whose algorithms help people who are colour-blind use computers more effectively has scooped £20,000 in prize money.

Luke Jefferson beat off 400 rivals to clinch HSBC’s Unipreneur award for his innovative application, which will now be taken forward by Microsoft.

As Scratchface Ltd, Jefferson and his colleague Luke Walsh created software that lets colour-blind people modulate colours that pop-up on displays to suit their impairment.

This allows them to see on-screen data that otherwise they would miss, suggesting the application will widen the access and enrich the experience of computers.

Their cash prize from HSBC is expected to be ploughed into their business, allowing the pair to take their company, and the software, to the next stage when they leave university.

To secure the cash, all five of the competition’s finalists had to stand up to a Dragons’ Den-style grilling in front of a live audience, who then voted for the best candidate to win.

In the UK, about one in 12 men and one in 200 women suffer from colour-blindness, blocking them from effective computer use in certain graphics, colour coded data and charts.
