BT to unveil BlackBerry-style device

The rumour mill churns out Google as the likeliest to launch a device to rival the iPhone or BlackBerry but BT is expected to beat it to the punch tomorrow.

Disclosures seen by the Sunday Times claim the teleco’s gadget will let users surf the Web and access their emails, as part of its bid to re-enter the mobile market.

The anticipated launch suggests moves by mobile operators, such as 3, to sell thousands of dongles that plug into laptops have not gone unnoticed by BT.

When used inside, the device is likely to run off BT’s wireless Home Hub, with external or on the move use enabled by it switching to Vodafone’s network.

Although the name of BT’s device remains under wraps, it is reported to be based on a gadget from the Asian smartphone manufacturer HTC.

Analysts suggest the timing is about right: although Ovum says corporate telecom budgets will change only marginally in 2008, most plan significant growth to mobile data budgets.

Last week, the maker of the BlackBerry said it will release new software in partnership with SAP to allow corporate users to be untethered from their computers and their offices.

The announcement from Research In Motion helped push the company’s stock to an all-time high, though users won’t be able to get their hands on the software for a couple of months.

Forecasts by IDC claim the mobile user population is set to rise from 800 million last year to 1billion in 2011, representing about 30 per cent of the global workforce.
