BT has agreed to takeover the IT workload of the Nationwide, Britain’s biggest building society, in a seven-year deal worth £160m. The agreement will see the telecoms company install and run Nationwide’s telephone, internet and data systems, and take over its third party network contracts. It represents the first IT outsourcing deal of its kind for the building society, which until now has developed and managed its technology operations in-house. Under the deal, Nationwide’s infrastructure, including its voice and data services, will sit on BT’s 21st Century Network as part of a service transformation programme. The programme, aimed at ensuring “cost predictability, will require BT to deliver enhanced remote access facilities to Nationwide’s non-office based employees. “Nationwide’s growth in recent years has meant that our IT infrastructure has also had to evolve at an exponential rate to keep up with demand,” explained Peter Stafford, Nationwide’s Head of IT Infrastructure. For BT, the deal is the latest in a line of IT contract wins from financial services companies, including Alliance & Leicester, Bradford and Bingley and Barclays. Last week, BT snapped up to Olching-based IT service specialists Stemmer GmbH and SND GmbH, in a deal the telco said would boost its skills and capabilities in the German market.
