IT staff to sleep out with the stars

Leggy ‘autocutie’ Emily Maitlis is to cosy up alongside hundreds of IT workers on the streets of London on Friday in a sponsored sleep-out for youth homelessness.

The glamorous Newsnight presenter will join about 500 City and IT workers from top corporations, planning to swap their cosy beds for waterproofs and sleeping bags.

She will bed down with staff from the IT departments of employers, like Ernst & Young, Cazenove, Barclays and RBS, to help raise funds for children charity NCH.

Arsenal footballers are expected to join the sleep-out at Potters Field, accompanied by boxer Ricky Hatton and chef Ainsley Harriott, with the goal of raising £500,000.

Last year, NCH reported 270 sleepers helped generate just under £400,000 for the sleep-out, known as Byte Night, which was pioneered ten years ago by 30 IT workers.

To acknowledge youth homelessness is not just London’s problem, this year’s 500 sleepers will be spread across England, in Manchester, Birmingham and Reading.

Alan Pateman-Jones, NCH sponsoring partner at Ernst & Young, said at least 75,000 young people experienced homelessness between 2006 and 2007.

“Homelessness impacts education, life skills, confidence and self-esteem, resulting in young people being prevented from achieving their true potential.”

James Bennett, Ernst &Young’s IT director, said: “One night’s discomfort for around 500 participants across the UK could result in NCH helping to prevent a scenario where being homeless is the only choice for a young person.”

NCH has said that IT staff interested in taking part in Byte Nights should call them on 020 7704 7135 for London and 020 7704 7149 for the regional events.
