Spammers hit suburbs the most

Spammers opt for the leafy suburbs over the city when deciding which computer users’ email inboxes to flood with their unwanted messages.

Not a single major city in the UK appears in a league table of the 25 most spammed towns compiled by email security firm Message Labs and seen by The Observer.

London is the closest, in 28th, followed by Manchester in 81st, Leeds in 91st, Liverpool in 99th, while propping up the bottom is Newcastle (166th) and Bristol (167th).

The south coast town of Fareham is the least spammed location, where daily junk amounts to just two emails, in contrast to Egham, which is spammed 189 times a day.

Alton and Petersfield, both in Hampshire, report 167 and 116 spams a day respectively, followed closely by Sutton Coldfield, Macclesfield and Sutton.

Accompanying global data from Message Labs shows spam was responsible for 78% of emails sent last month - an increase on July, attributed to the expansion of botnets.
