Tax demands on British households are rising, with each now paying a lifetime bill to Revenue & Customs of £668,000. Figures from The Taxpayers Alliance show the lifetime tax take for the typical household has grown since last year by an above inflation rate of 6 per cent. Poorer families were the hardest hit by rising taxes, given that their bill leapt to £264,000, up from £233,000 on 2007, representing a rise of 13 per cent. “The government say they sympathise with the plight of ordinary people, but they don't seem to care about the massive tax burden that people have to pay throughout their lives,” the TA said. The group’s figures are based on the amount of taxes it calculated that most households would pay over 40 years in work and a further 15 years in retirement. They indicate that the “cripplingly high tax burden” and gloomy economic forecasts have combined to result in more support for tax cuts, and more opposition to tax rises. More than one-third of people are ready to vote for the party that commits not to raise taxes, compared with just 6 per cent who would be less likely to vote for that party. Crucially, floating voters were the most likely to switch their vote on the basis of a pledge not to bring in new tax rises, with 43 per cent in favour and only 5 per cent against. “The credit crunch has put families in a situation where they are having to economise at home, “ the TA said, “so they expect politicians to do likewise and cut back on government spending and give them some of their money back through tax cuts.” An accompanying poll cited by the group of 1,600 voters found that 64 per cent believed the government was taxing and spending too much. Seventy four per cent also said politicians were using environmental concerns as an excuse to bring in green taxes. Oct 3, 2008 Email this article Printer friendly page Previous Page
