The government has filled a website with make-believe offenders and crimes as a prototype of an online service that will ‘name and shame’ criminals in the community. Revealing the Criminal Results Online beta, Jack Straw said openly publishing court sentences was the first step to opening up the criminal justice system via the Web. The Justice Secretary said providing residents in England and Wales with the identities of criminals living nearby would ensure justice ‘is seen to be done.’ When fully operational, the website will offer anyone who logs on the final outcome of all adult criminal cases, except those where a reporting restriction applies. Its fictitious records can currently be searched by entering the name of offender, date of offence, regional court, type of offence and the date of sentencing. During its consultation, which asks for user feedback , the site’s dummy data will be replaced by real data on knife-possession crimes heard in Magistrates’ Courts. Users are also invited to tell the Ministry of Justice the type of information the site should include, and can comment on how accessible the information should be. Responses will help the government on the design and content of the fully operational site, which will cost £5m to create, based on similar builds “elsewhere,” the MoJ said.
