Police have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of defrauding HM Revenue & Customs of £1million through a cyber attack on the department’s computer systems. Joined by tax officials who detected the online attack, detectives at the Metropolitan Police began investigating in June and alerted the Police Central e-Crime unit. The unit is now looking into a criminal network, which it suspects is stealing cash from HMRC by making bogus claims via its self-assessment tax repayments system. Detective Chief Inspector Terry Wilson from the PCeU said: “This is a complex operation by the Met and HMRC and shows how such e-crime attacks and frauds are being identified and taken very seriously by both organisations. “The issue of e-crime is a growing problem across all business sectors and online services but… we are committed to ensuring that criminals do not find the internet a safe environment to operate in”. By working with government and industry partners, the unit also said it was determined to ensure public services on the Web have the “full protection of law enforcement.” Police arrested the man in his home in Poplar, East London in the early hours of Tuesday morning on suspicion of fraud and money laundering. He is currently in custody at Bethnal Green police station. Sep 4, 2009 Email this article Printer friendly page Previous Page
