Microsoft will tackle joblessness in a way that the state cannot by providing training and paid apprenticeships in IT through its trading network to 500,000 of the unemployed. The software giant believes “there’s only so much” ministers can do to help those out of work, so its 32,000 partner firms will offer the placements to job-seekers over the next three years. It launched the nationwide scheme as unemployment in the UK climbed to 2.4m in August, making it on track to peak at 3m by the middle of next year, as predicted by the CBI. The employers’ group is backing Microsoft in its ‘Britain Works’ campaign, partly for giving smaller businesses in the company’s chain the money to train 3,000 people as IT apprentices. Under the scheme, 700 of those IT apprentices should be ready by September 2010, Microsoft said, basing its estimates on a similar initiative it ran in the West Midlands. The company will work with Jobcentre Plus, which will point job seekers to the opportunities, which also include vouchers for basic and technical IT training courses. “There are thousands of people who do not have the appropriate skills that businesses need in today’s IT led economy,” said Lord Jones, a former director-general of the CBI. “Businesses still need these people, and so a significant part of the this campaign will focus on making ‘Skills for Business’ training vouchers available”. Microsoft also announced the launch of new job matching and training service among its partner firms, mainly comprised of IT resellers, services companies and software houses.
