PC World unveils £100 laptop scrappage scheme

The computer industry is copying the motor trade's cash-for-bangers scheme – with PC World's flagship store now offering up to £100 for old laptops.

Anyone through the doors of PC World on Tottenham Court Road will be entitled to a trade-in discount of £100 or less off a new laptop or PC running Windows 7.

The scheme, designed to celebrate the launch of Microsoft's latest operating system, is currently confined to the London shop, though it may be extended if demand is sufficient.

Customers are not expected to have fully-functional laptops to qualify for the discount, which will be decided in-store on an individual basis, but should be able to turn them on.

Laptops traded in will be reconditioned and passed to the second-hand market, or, if not, recycled and disposed of responsibly, according to terms of the deal unveiled on Friday.

PC World is also offering customers who buy Windows 7 a discount of up to 50% to have it installed, with its range of systems including an "expanded" fleet of laptops.
