Demand dips for IT contractors

The start of a new financial year has seen demand for IT contractors dilute, two reports say, suggesting clients' priority in April was the sign-off of full-time roles.

Pre-employment screening firm Powerchex was first to record a dip in business activity for IT contractors last week, in the release of its monthly and yearly figures.

The annual figures show IT contractors in financial services were the only one of six types of sector professional to have fewer new opportunities at the end of March.

Although not referring directly to IT contractors, the firm's founder said recruitment was undoubtedly suffering from the prospect of a hung parliament after May 6.

Pointing to sector-specific pressures, Alexandra Kelly also said the City felt uncertain about what actions a new government, of whatever hue, would take against the banks.

Yesterday, the REC published its Report on Jobs for April, showing that the number of contract IT workers its member agents placed has fallen slightly since March.

According to the index, demand last month for contract IT workers stood at 57.5, down from 58.5 in March, though still considerably higher than the 36.9 of last April.

The monthly index shows demand also fell for full-time IT staff, yet from a new high set in March, meaning they are now the second most sought-after full-time workers.

But the same shortages of IT skills on a permanent basis persist, with Sharepoint, Analysis and technical management being among the most difficult to source.

Developers are even harder for the REC's member agents to find, with a shortage of such IT candidates reported for both permanent and contract openings.
