Companies House - Making Details Private

    Hi

What's the best way to stop other web sites publishing director details (eg address, DOB, name etc) that they've sourced from Companies House? And speaking of which, how can I stop Companies House from selling those details/making them public?

    Any assistance gratefully received.

    Cheers in advance.

You can't. Have a look at this thread. Plenty of others on same topic here.

In short you cannot unless your life is under threat.

Legislation first from the different jurisdictions in the UK, and then European based requires that all directors for companies in Europe are on a public record. This allows those dealing with the companies whether it's a consumer or another business to be able to find out who runs those companies.

In the case of consumers who have issues with faulty goods or services it allows them to find and address an officer in the company directly and it stops people from hiding. The information like your date of birth is needed in cases where 2 or more people share the same name and run a similar company name to you.

As the data is open and a matter of public record websites are allowed to republish the data. Companies House doesn't sell the data, you can use it for free if you can be bothered to scrap it. Companies House are in the process of producing free data sets for all their data and some have been released already.

If you have read the other posts on this board there are some agencies who insist that you prove that you are a director of the company and other direct clients do actually check up on you before offering contracts, so doing that would limit the amount of work you get.

And rightly so, IMHO. Nothing says shady quite like trying to be incognito.

You can withhold your address by using a "service address", perhaps your office or your accountants'. If you're already registered at your home address this will still be available to public as a previous address thought. Your name will still be there as will your DoB. It's called public record for a reason.

Companies House don't sell your data. It's public record and companies use it for all number of reasons. You'll need to accept this. Failing that, I can send you details of flights to the Cayman Islands.
