Emigrating to Canada, working as IT Consultant for UK company.

    Hi,

I am moving to Canada next month with a permanent residence visa. As I don't currently have a job over there, my current employer wished to keep me on as a contractor for 3-6 months while I get settled and find a job out there. It works out great for both parties.

The first thing I am trying to figure out is how my contractor insurance would work. I work in the IT field so I would probably need some. I am not sure though where I should be looking for insurance though as I will be living in a different country but working for a UK company. Do I need to get insurance here or in Canada before I go? I have looked at umbrella companies but they have the same problem where they will only do it for the same country.

The second issue I have (not sure if anyone knows anything about tax law), but has anyone had any experience with tax when working in a different country? I know UK and Canada have a double taxation law but is this dependant on where you are living or the country of the employer or which bank account your money is going into? I have tried calling the HMRC, booked 2 different call backs for this issue and got 0 so far. So any advice here would be much appreciated.

I really really need some advice here as I have been looking everywhere and really can't find any answers to my questions. If anyone can give me any advice or point me in the right direction I would be incredibly grateful. The one I am really worried about and can't seem to figure out is the indemnity insurance so any clarity there would be fantastic.

    Thanks,

    Chris

How much insurance cover is your current employer asking you to have when you turn contractor ? - that’s amount you need

Also why not just stay as a permie for next six months and do work from Canada

    Sorted

This makes the most sense. No point spinning up a LTD for just 3 months.
It would likely be inside IR35 anyway.

My employer wants to start looking for a replacement for my role and wont employ me as a permanent employee at the same time. It also means that I can have a rolling monthly contract while I look for a job in Canada. I am not sure what you mean about how much insurance cover is required? They say I need personal indemnity insurance as I will be handling company data.

Can't you use a brolly? insurance comes with the deal, and all deductions are sorted for you.
hassle free, if you use a good one like CU

I was thinking of doing that but I'm not sure if I need a UK one or Canadian one. I think Canadian as all the UK ones wont take me on because I am moving abroad.

talk to ContractorUmbrella, i think if you keep a UK bank account you'll be ok.
i used them when i lived in NL and worked for UK co's.

Yes, how much indemnity insurance do they require you to have £100k, £1M, £10M - no point you getting £100K cover if they require £10M

I am very interested in this subject as I am also planning to move to Canada. Is there a contractors market there? If there is - is the money as good (or close) to UK?

If the work will be done in Canada, why don't you find a Candian IT agency via LinkedIn and ask them to negotiate a contract with your current employer ?
