    Default Accountancy Crash Course

I'm just making the leap from a perm job to a contracting position - have myself a contract, a company and an accountant but realised that I've no experience with accounting and a lot of what my accountant is saying goes right over my head.

I was wondering if there's any resource which will give me a crash course in accounting? I need to start right from the basics and work my way up.

I know my accountant should be able to help, but I don't know even how to explain what I don't know to him and I've already bombarded him with so many questions that I've come to realise that it wouldn't be a bad move to try and learn some of this stuff.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Hi Martyn,

This is a good place to start! Having a read through here will at least give you a general idea of what questions to pose to your accountant. You can always ask questions here too, and then go back to confirm with your own accountant (he may know things we don't, and can tailor advice to suit you).

You could also ask him for a set of management accounts. This will be a summary of your trading to date and will highlight how things fit together, and also what taxes are accruing.

Your accountant is probably like most of us, we'd rather answer lots of questions than have clients unsure of what they are doing.

    Hi Martyn,

Why not ask your accountant to meet, that way giving you the chance to sit down with them rather than playing email tennis?
