I'm disappointed the other thread was locked. I see nothing wrong with contractors discussing their experiences of providers of services to contractors.

Clearly nothing should be posted regarding any current action but, in terms of service quality, why not?

Unless I'm very mistaken I think the problem is that the entire issue hasn't reached court yet. Once he is found innocent or guilty and he is sentenced then we will be able to discuss it until then we can't.

My point is I don't want to post anything on his current legal problem. I don't see why contractors can't discuss the level of accountancy service provided however...

I think its time to carry out some damage limitation. Basically find a new accountant and move on. <mod snip>

Has anyone come across a small/medium sized accountants that specialises in IT contractors, who are willing to do last years accts/tax return for no additional fee, on a monthly fee basis similar to Upton? There is an opportunity for an accountancy to get extra business taking on Uptons clients, on the basis they do last years accts/tax return.

Thx in advance for any replies/recommends.

From the http://forums.contractoruk.com/accou...-accounts.html thread is appears some might be waiting for Upton to complete their year end accounts. If this is the case I highly recommend they either chase daily or move on immediately. I’m not sure if Upton has any senior accountants left? I’ve communicated with 3 senior accountants other than Darren in the years I was with Upton and 2 left years ago and the other is on maternity leave. The other accountant I spoke with was a junior. Darren Upton currently does not work at Upton & Co in any capacity so if he’s was doing your accounts then you might be in a bit of a pickle. Upton are looking to appoint a new senior accountant in his place but this has yet to occur to my knowledge.

I was hoping the same but realistically it’s a lot of time and effort to do accounts for a full year, taking over from another accountant where obtaining history is almost impossible at present. I had quotes from 2 recommended accountants and they both quoted £500+VAT to do my 2010 accounts with no additional fee for 2011 even though I’m joining late (year end for 2011 is September for me). So that’s 5 months of payment to do 12 months of accounts for the current year topped off by the one off payment for the previous. You may find better but this was reasonable for me.

this made me laugh from the Upton Accountants home page..

Another email scam warning from HMRC

The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

I had an email conversation with him a couple of weeks ago and there was no inclination that this was the case. He did advise of a new bank account number for my payments on account, which did sound some alarm bells, but I haven't seen any reason to jump ship bar the conversations on here as my queries are always answered promptly and filings done etc. Maybe that will come back to haunt me.

You haven't sent any money to that account have you? If you have I would recommend checking if HMRC have received the payment.
