I'm aware of the usual recommendations for specialist contractor accountants (e.g. NW, SJD, Intouch, Primus) but wondered if anyone was using a firm based in Newcastle? I've seen Forbes Young advertise as being the 'UK's top rated accountants for contractors' and have local offices but wondered if anyone used them or any of other local firms? Cheers...

I believe Upton's have an office in Newcastle
Never heard of Forbes, but looked at their website and they all seem to be ex-SJD staff?
The "local" offices are probably unmanned rent a room offices that they just use as an accommodation address for post etc.
Why do you want one in Newcastle, my accountant is not local to me and not had a problem yet. I can see a local accountant could be handy if you have a complicated business but as a contractor it really is pretty straight forward."The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance." Cicero -
I wouldn't overdo the relevance of getting a local accountant though. I made that mistake and looked for a local accountant (he was PCG accredited) and he was completely useless.
I've just moved to NW and they're 100 times better. The fact that geographically they're nowhere near me isnt a problem.Rhyddid i lofnod psychocandy!!!!Comment

Never heard of them but they've got a peapod on their website so they must be good. Ken McTaggart used to be with SJD but had a massive barney with Simon Dolan. It was well documented on here. I reckon its just another mob trying to have a run a the contractor market.Comment

Great Accountant
How do you choose a great Accountant? - word of mouth? recommendation? possibly good luck, etc
How do you know you have a great Accountant?
Balance the time you save, advice you get on your investments, including non contract earnings & of course amount of Tax you pay on income recieved, against how much the Accountant is costing you.
I've used the same Accountant for over 11 years now, currently at Forbes Young and would recommend him without reservation.
PM me if you want his details.
And no, not on commisssion...Comment

I think SJD North East are actually based in New Castle. Their other offices like Leeds are virtual.
Graeme Bennett at Forbes Young used to run SJD NE according to a friend of mine. Don't know about others.Comment
