Agree, far too many contractor specialists treating contractors like commodities that you can treat the same.

Many do, it is important that they recognise that service is key to their success, when they start to just focus on getting new clients they can become complacent.

Couldn't agree more. I have seen this happen first hand, values go out of the window...

I'm watching this accountant lovefest guys, and if it gets anymore incestuous I may decide to do something about it (like ban all acountants from posting).

            New Accountant ASAP

            Folks,
I've been contracting for 5 years and for the first 4 used a firm in Aberdeen - super service but only downside is they didn't provide any tax advice or at least not any proactive tax advice....which when I started contracting wasn't too big a deal being a footloose and fancy free bachelor. Fast forward a few years I now have a wife, a few more grey hairs and a kid on the way so need to take tax planning more seriously. I switched firms last year (London based) and it's been a disaster, I should have terminated a lot sooner but being a nice guy I gave them chances to improve their service as they were a relatively new outfit - anyway long story short, I'm now going to terminate their services effective immediately...patience has finally worn out.
I'm looking recommendations for accountants that provide all the usual Ltd company services as well as personal tax returns and most importantly proactive tax advice. I work internationally quite a lot so a firm that is used to dealing with with foreign expenses would be good. Where they are physically based isnt an issue, I'm pretty low maintenance but when I pick up the phone or send an email I want prompt service. Having read through many of the posts on here I see many contractors use accounting software or their firms provide portals for submitting expenses etc. I've never had experience of that - I've always just emailed a pack of info (invoice, expense sheet, scanned receipts, bank statement) each month to my accountant and they let me know the available dividend, made sure my VAT returns were completed and paid on time, NI paid on time and at year end let me know my personal tax liability and CT liability and dates to be paid etc. If this is much easier to do via a 'portal' then happy to give it a go. Fee's aren't a big issue for me as I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for so (not wanting to sound pompous) whether it's £75 a month or £150 doesn't matter if the service is excellant.
A few names seems to pop up a lot SJD and Nixon Williams, any other recommendations?
            Appreciate the advice

3 months on...decided to go with the "small fish" BI Accountancy. Really impressed with the quick responses and knowledge of my sector.

Very smooth process setting up my Ltd Company, also FreeAgent is a breeze!

              Good work so far.
