    The Dutch

My first impressions in Amsterdam last year were clearly false. I though the Dutch were lovely.

After a few days in Maastricht I find them rude, arrogant and balshy.

Bit of a shock after Germany. It amplifies how lovely the Germans are.

Is this a Maastricht thing? If this makes me a racist, then I'm fine with that.

Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.

The Dutch are lovely if not a tad gay.

            Perhaps just my experience then.

For example. Landed at Maastricht Sunday morning. Needed a taxi. Walked to the taxi rank. No cabs. Fair enough. So I walked to the passenger information point and asked for them to help me find a taxi. Clearly more hassle than she could be arsed for. She begrudgingly ordered me a taxi and told me to wait by the rank.

I did. Eventually a bloke wanders over and asks me if I ordered a taxi. I said I had. He then proceeds to bollock me for waiting at the taxi rank and not the passenger information point. I explained I did what I was told.

Then the whole journey continues to bollock me, and winge on about how people not following instructions costs him money. The whole ******* way there.

This is only one example. There are plenty. Miserable arrogant sons of bitches. Seriously.

Being ex Dutch myself, I renounced my Dutch citizenship two years ago, I can confirm your observations are correct they are arrogant and rude. A weekend stoned and drunk in Amsterdam won't give you the correct impression.

I work with a lot of Dutch and Germans.

When you first start working with them both you find that the stereotype you had of the them was the wrong way round. The Gemans seem a lot more chilled and the Dutch more direct/cold etc. Then after a while with the Dutch you find that it's not as bad as it seems but their way of talking seems confrontational although their intent isn't.

                Just my £0.02, YMMV

Perhaps a guidebook for the discerning CUKer is in order? Like the rough guide but for contractors. Steakhouses, Wine bars, Accommodating Ladies, Fixers to liaise with the local feds to explain away any indiscretion caused by the language barrier - that kind of thing.

Maybe not. If your editor is a chump from Luton then anywhere is going to sound like paradise in comparison.
