    That's a new one

Got a call from a foreign sounding lady regarding a "problem" with one of our software programs, said she had changed computer and could not reinstall it on the new one. Seems to be a Chinese number.

I asked what error message she was getting and she came out with something like, "this computer is not the original computer this program was installed on, please contact the selling company for the registration number" which is certainly not a message our programs generate. Thought it may have been a virus infection and asked for her details so I could get back to her and she quickly said "I must have the wrong number, sorry" and put the phone down.

WTF? Even assuming they wanted to copy our crappy little programs, why would they need to phone me for a serial number when they could just repackage the various files installed?

I wonder how many software companies fall for it.
