Ministry of Justice fined over prison data loss

What is the point of fining a government department? Ridiculous.

Individuals who are responsible should be taken to task and sacked/fined if it's a criminal breach.

To maintain the appearance of doing something. I ask the same question when huge banks are fined because of fraud committed by their employees, as with the Libor fraud, instead of jut prosecuting the individuals who committed crimes; the people who suffer are the low end employees whose jobs are cut to pay the fine, and the customers who see service going downhill (amazingly, it can still go a lot further downhill when you think it's reached rock bottom).

I've worked in local government before and I'm not surprised.
I remember one customer had an encrypted memory stick with the password taped to it "in case she forgot"

The only time I have worked with local government, I had a ruddy outdoor complexion that came from constantly facepalming the whole of every working day!
