    Wasting Police Time

So Hampshire police have had the Spanish police running around on their behalf arresting a sick child's parents, only for the whole idiotic business to be abandoned when they realised what terrible publicity it was attracting decided it wasn't necessary: BBC News - Ashya King's parents to face no action, says CPS

I presume they'll have to pay the Spanish authorities for all the time and resources that have been wasted on this fiasco.

Well done, the boys in blue

I think so often the police and related bodies just don't use their brains or apply any common sense. They think they just have to follows the rules and it'll all be OK. And then it isn't.

The police were following CPS orders.

Some ****wit at the hospital obviously mentioned they were Jehovah Witnesses so everyone went into panic mode.

One side effect of all this "terrible publicity" is plenty of donations to pay for the poor kid's private proton whatever cancer treatment.

Which is an interesting strategy for anyone wanting a treatment that the NHS won't pay for.

Ashya’s grandmother has spoken out, explaining that his parents fled to Spain in order to sell the family home there to pay for him to undergo proton beam therapy privately. But the fact is that the parents don’t need to sell their home. Proton beam radiotherapy is available on the NHS – though it is suitable for only 1 per cent of tumours.

The doctors had said they wouldn't give him the treatment, as they didn't believe it would help.

If the parents want to pay privately for him to have the treatment anyway, and those who would provide the treatment agree that it will do no harm (even though it may do no good), then they're entitled to do so.

But the fact that, in the abstract sense, the treatment is available on the NHS, is irrelevant in the concrete situation of the NHS being unwilling to provide that treatment to a specific patient.

That's assuming the NHS are right. If you have the money you can pay for whatever treatment you want, which brings up the question as to what extent people are allowed to be involved in the choice of their NHS treatment. If it's being provided for free, should you just shut up and do what the doctor says?
