For want of a better thread title...

I was chatting with an Indian colleague and he was telling me about the many different languages that are spoken in India. His mother tongue is Hindi, though he says he can also speak a bit of Gujurati, but he was explaining how somebody from India would pronounce letters in the western alphabet. A "w" is pronounced like a "v" and vice versa - I'm sure we've all heard that. In fact I remember being in stitches in a security meeting many moons ago when an attendee was expressing possible security violations on the Wax Wee-Em-Ess system for which he was responsible.

But anyway, I digress. He also explained to me that the letter "x" has a "ksh" sound - so the word taxi would be pronounced by many Indians as "takshi".

Hearing this, I had to restrain myself from enquiring as to how one was supposed to pronounce the name of our newest team member sat opposite whose name, I noticed from looking at his badge, was Bindhu Dixit

What I like is that stuff in Hindi cannot be directly translated into English. Ask your Indian colleague to explain Jai Ho - as in the title of the song from Slumdog Millionaire.
