    Act of Union ...

My daughter has pointed out that next year marks the 300th anniversary of the Act of Union, politically linking England to Scotland. We all agreed this is likely to become more of a debating point with the pending coronation of the Scottish Socialists and their Trades Union clique.

Still, I suppose the whole point of the Union is that power is shared. I guess we have no alternative but to submit and take the pain (as, Mr Smith so wittly pointed out, did the Scots under the Baroness)

    Wake me up in 2009

There was good factoid on the Today programme this morning: the equivalent of 26% of all council tax revenues collected in England ends up in local council coffers in Scotland.

Does that mean 26% of English council tax income actually goes to Scotland? Or is is just an overview figure: the amount in Scottish local council coffers is equivalent to etc....? And I take it you're referring to the "Barnet formula" under which England generously subsidises Scottish local government. Or seems to, if you only look at the Barnet payment.

Factoids like that are easy to come by. Here is a bigger fact, unfortunately I only have figures to 1999 since it requires some digging in the government's figures (for some reason they don't publish this conclusion directly themselves).

The Total UK Taxation Revenues for the year to the 5th April 1999 were £356,800.000 Million pounds (356.8 Billions). Scotland with 8.6% of the population contributed £41,346,600 Million Pounds (41.346 Billions) or 11.6% of the total UK Tax revenues. In return, under the Barnet Formula, Scotland received £12.2 Billion Pounds or 3.4%!

Back in the 60s a Nationalist friend of mine used to say "The English can have the f***ing oil! If that's the price of freedom, it's cheap at the price". Alas, they have had the oil, and still hang on to the tax contributions, to keep the London snouts in the trough.

As the main thief Gordo is Scottish, not sure what your beef is. You can have your tax money back if it means getting rid of Brownstuff. Cheap at the price
