Being as people were bored and someone asked for a puzzle....

No web searching for the answer, if you know it do not spoil it for others!

If you have a goat tied to the inside edge of a circular field, how long does its chain need to be before it can eat half of the grass in the field?

You may assume: the goat is a particle, the chain and fence are inflexible, the grass is distributed evenly, each blade of grass is a particle etc.

Edit, didn't read the bit about the chain being on the inside edge and assumed it to be in the middle so most of what I've written is a solution to the wrong question

I'm making the assumption for my workings that the field has a radius of 5m.

So, area of a circle is Pi r squared.

Therefore the area of the field is 5 x 5 x pi = 78.54 sqm

Half the area of the field is 39.27 sqm

    Working backwards 39.27 / Pi = rsquared

    39.27/Pi = 12.5

Square root of 12.5 is 3.54

Therefore the chain needs to be 35.4% of the field's radius to cover half the surface area.

    I think

Hmmm, should I get this and model it?

I think I need a CAD package to work this out...

          How tall is the grass?

For an exact answer we might need to know that.

The chain is inflexible? It's never going to work then.

So the grass is zero height, which at least means it's a 2d geometry problem
