What's with all the motorway road works

Driving back from Devon to Cambridge late last night I encountered an unbelievable number of motorway roadworks, more than I've ever seen in 20 years driving. There were two or three on the M5, literally more than a dozen on the M4, and the A1(M) and (I think) the M1, were closed for several junctions due to roadworks.

So I wondered if this is part of some concerted operation, presumably other than just a sudden drive to eliminate potholes (which would not normally be done until the spring) or spending the loads of spare money the Government has kicking around (not).

The common feature is that these works all seem to be on motorways heading from/to London, and I note there is also a 10 mile or longer road work on the M3, from the M25 practically all the way to Farnborough.

      Yes.

BBC News - Roads funding: £15bn to be spent on schemes for England

The A1 in the North is being expanded to 3 lanes for instance

You should try driving from Munich to Stuttgart -

          Chortle!

I'm talking about this decade - Those schemes probably won't be started for years and years, if ever.
