    Tailor made

Having been pretty disappointed with the quality of my last few suits (both low-range el cheapos, and mid-range £200-£300 from Debenhams and the like), both in terms of styling and construction (I always have to sew buttons back on within the first few months) I started thinking about getting something tailor made.

Being a tight-fisted git, however, I don't want to spend a fortune. Has anyone tried the online guys, such as iTailor.co.uk? I just specced up a nice 3 piece job for £175, but of course there's no way of knowing if the material is really crappy, if it's a really poor job, etc, or whether it's just cheap because they're using child labour or whatever.

Reviews I've found range from great to terrible, although a lot are talking about the shirts, not the suits, and seeing as they're in Hong Kong or something the returns policy ain't golden. Part of me thinks it's worth the risk at that price anyway. Anyone used one of these guys and got recommendations / warnings?

Try Hugo Boss suits before you write off ready made ones.

Bespoke tailoring isn't cheap. For £175, I presume, you might get a print out of a three-piece.

If you are up North, I'd recommend Leeds or York for bespoke tailors.

If you can get to a branch of Slaters Menswear. I got hacked off with high street ones about 15 years ago. Bought one from here and never been anywhere since. Great range of makes and style from classic suit makers to the trendier Ted Baker stuff. They'll alter any aspect of the suit and everyone that works their knows their tailoring. Not just sales staff. Wouldnt go anywhere else TBH.

+1 for Hugo Boss. Got a couple of their OTP. They fit me really well, but that's just luck. They do offer alterations to the OTP as part of the deal though.

Obvs fused not canvased etc but still good value for money.

I'd rather not try Hugo Boss - I don't like their styling. To be honest, I'd rather not pay for a name label at all - I've had much more expensive suits in the past (not fashion labels, very good suits) and I'm not sure it's worth the money.

Not wanting to spend £800 on suit now, but wanting something half decent with a bit of choice in the fabric and styling this is what I've come up with. I'm not up North, but I know a tailor in Reading I could go to for bespoke (unfortunately they've recently been promoting themselves on the back of making suits for footballers, which puts me off) - if I wanted to spend the money.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's worth a punt at this cost. Apparently it can take a while for them to deliver, but I'll report back as and when in case anyone cares.

Had a couple from Slaters at around £400. Their 3 piece range tends to be very limited, but not bad quality. The ones I've had have lasted. A good suggestion, if only they had more choice.

Surprised at this? Which branch did you go in? There are bleedin 100's of them in Manchester.

My last suit was I think was £1100, Canali, tailor made not required. Home | Canali Looks and fits the business.

But if your business is selling mobile phones at carphone warehouse then it's back to <300.
