I'm probably showing my ignorance about Facebook here but, I get the impression that they still wanted to keep in touch with the VD Mum - they just didn't want all the constant drivel?

You can unfollow without defriending - allows you to curtail the drivel and click through when you do want to see what the person's up to. Also allows them to continue to see/comment on your content.
