I remember the days before self service. In Germany they even cleaned the windscreen and some places they even gave free coffee.

Still do at some of them, primarily Shell...Bit of a pain as I never know whether to drop the guy a couple of Euros Or not, as I try not to use Shell as they're the most expensive

What drives me nuts is how long it takes to fill up. UK pumps are SO slow.

In Dubai you could just stick the nozzle in, leave it clicked on and go and sit in the car while you waited for it to fill up.

That says nothing about speed, if you're sitting in the car waiting for it to fill. You can do it in the UK too, by the way. Just take the filler cap and put it into the handle between the lever and the guard so it keeps the lever depressed.

A matchstick or something similar stuck in the little hole at the side of the handle works well. On the big, fast, HGV diesel pumps there is a metal thingy in there so the drivers don't need to keep hold of the lever. However, if YACOTBAC you just get your chauffeur to do things like that.

Yes, the pump cuts out when the tank is full. The only problem with that is when it is not reset the next user gets a soaking when the pump restarts. For that reason those type of fillers are banned from public use in the UK

To be honest, I never actually filled up a car myself in Dubai.

The mechanism was more for the benefit of the pump attendant so he could fill several cars at once.

I don't know what it is but that just wouldn't work on my car. Pump keeps clicking off every 5 seconds or so & I have to let go of the lever and press again. Takes forever & when the weather is lousy I never bother filling right up.
