Walking to the supermarket at lunch time I have to cross a bridge over the docks, not a very high one but still, as I was I saw a "dishevelled man" walking towards me looking thoroughly miserable (but given the area everyone here does). As I walk past I notice blood on his hand, I walk by after 50 yds or so turn round and realise it was his wrist too, obviously he's had a go at them and made a good effort too. Thinking to myself should I call the police. I watched him stop, and start looking over the rails and by the time I get down a flight of stairs at the other side and got out from behind the trees to see the bridge again he was gone. 10 mins later walking the route back there is a policeman finishing a search of the area and getting back into his van. Someone had the better sense to do what I was procrastinating over.
I know (probably) the fall could not have killed him, I know there was not enough blood to cause any immediate concern, and given I have once tried to take my own life, I know that if he wanted to kill himself no one could have stopped him merely delayed it, but again because I was once in that situation I know that sometimes it just takes one person to change the outcome of an event, and as I write this I know that should have been me to at least try.
All of a sudden I have lost my appetite…
