What is the point of a contract with a stated period?

My contract has (N) days notice either side. So, what is the point on having it for a set amount of months?

          practically nothing.

          it shows intent?

maybe now judges are ignoring wills they will start rewriting contracts as well?

It means any work you do during the period is at the rate specified.

Can't see there's any other point to it.
