Syrian toddler Aylan's father drove capsized boat, other passengers say

The family had been living in a Turkish refugee camp for three years so they were not under threat of death. Nothing is ever as seen. It does not make the death of the child any less tragic. It does however raise questions about how deal with the refugee problem.

The reason people leave the refugee camps is because they are in limbo and want their lives back so they can go forward.

If you hear most of the Syrians on TV the young ones, both male and female, talk about continuing with their education. You can't go to university in a refugee camp especially when you don't know whether you will be there months or years.

Indeed, one also hears that a lot from Calais migrants. They appear to expect us to pay for it.

It is, up to the end of secondary school (unless you choose to go private).

Presumably you didn't mean that ALL education (including all those post-uni certification courses) should be free?

Doctoral work should be funded from a source other than the one doing the research. At the end of the day we all benefit.

I agree post-uni courses are a different kettle of fish. But uni education in general should be free at the undergraduate level.

Are you saying all education at all levels from infant through to through to a PHD should be free? Should evening classes be free for those who have left formal education?

Should education be free for people born within a country, resident within a country or have just arrived a country?

Should the German tax-payers be on the hook for the educational costs of the million+ refugees who are expected to arrive this year?

There's no such thing as "Free". Someone always has to pay.

It's a resource allocation problem. If you are allocating resources to one group, you are not allocating them to another and politicians have to be very mindful of that.

Since I've never heard anyone ask them "who will pay for your education" I don't actually presume that.

The majority come from countries where they pay for education. So having to work and study won't put them off.

Why? If it is free then someone else has to pay for it.
