    Care homes fees justified ?

Put my nan into a dementia care home recently self funded as she had more than £25k in assets, total cost per month is £5.7k , once she is down to £16k is local council will cover £3k then the remainder has to be covered by family . I went to visit her and it just seemed like a halls of residence same layout and just a few nurses on and I thought its a lot of money for what my nan gets. Then I noticed this on BBC today were care homes are claiming they are not making enough and want to pull out the market Social care: Crisis talks with homes 'on brink' - BBC News yet I don't see a care home owner who is skint, there is one who lives in my town and is well known as he drives around in an orange Lamborghini ! My nans place has 80 residence assuming all paying £5.7k that's £456k fees a month £4.5mil a year ... I just don't get how the level of fees can be justified and then care home owners claiming not enough £ in it ??

It costs a lot to wash your hands of your elderly relatives. Bite the bullet and look after them yourself before all your inheritance is frittered away.

Not washing hands, we would of looked after her if we could, she lived with my mother circa 300miles away from me, but mother herself is old and was not physically able to care for my nan, hence home last resort.

I hope your parents invoice you for all the money they spent bringing you up

They need 24/7 365 care, including trained nurse and specialised equipment. It's not like putting up your sprightly uncle Albert for a few nights, believe me....

Low costs, too. My sister in law works in a care home and makes about 14k a year - and she's fairly senior there. She's turned down a Manager position as it would mean being on call 24 hours a day and not getting much more in pay.

Most of the staff will be care workers on minimum wage. These places usually have 1 or 2 trained nurses. A lot of money is made. Mrs Zardoz wanted to open one and we looked into the numbers

                    But so are the costs?

I tried googling the OP question. No-one seems to know!
